Assistant or Associate Professor, Horticultural Food Crops and Production Systems 12 month, tenure-track, 60% teaching, 40% research

POSITION SUMMARY:
This faculty position will be focused on teaching and research in the area of Sustainable Food Production Systems related to horticultural crops. The successful candidate will be active in both the undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, specifically the undergraduate Horticulture Production option and graduate education in horticultural food crops including our M.S. specialization in Urban Food Systems. The research responsibility will include establishment of an internationally recognized and externally funded program focused on sustainable and/or organic horticultural crops and production systems. Candidates with teaching and research experience related to horticultural crops and assessing sustainability, crop production methods, organic and/or regenerative agriculture, and urban food systems are encouraged to apply. This position provides numerous opportunities including: the potential for multi-disciplinary collaboration across campus, leadership at the Willow Lake Student Farm, working with faculty located at research stations across the state, and contributing towards the growing undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources at Kansas State University.

POSITION LOCATION: Manhattan, Kansas

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• A Ph.D. in Horticulture or closely related Plant Science discipline
• Be qualified for membership on the K-State Graduate Faculty upon start date (earned Ph.D. and published at least one research article in a refereed journal)
• Commitment to excellence in teaching
• Demonstrated excellence in research
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary teams including stakeholders
• Experience in sustainable production practices, as well as experimental design, analysis, and interpretation of research surrounding sustainable agriculture
• Strong commitment to expanding and fostering diversity

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate education including scholarship of teaching and learning and mentoring or advising students
• Demonstrated ability to develop an externally-funded research program that contribute to knowledge surrounding sustainable food production systems
• Experience with production practices of sustainable and/or organic horticultural food cropping systems
• Ability to provide leadership and active participation towards the success of the Willow Lake Student Farm located approximately 15 minutes from the KSU campus
• Ability to maintain productive professional relationships with staff and faculty within the department, college, and university, as well as collaborating institutions, not-for-profit organizations, farming associations and growers in the region

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching
• Teach courses in the undergraduate Horticulture Production option related to food crops production, as well as teach courses in the M.S. Urban Food Systems specialization and, graduate course(s) in his/her area of specialization
• Advise undergraduate and graduate students and serve as faculty advisor for the Student Farm Club
• Active member of the Urban Food Systems faculty group and the Horticulture Teaching faculty group
• Engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning, such as course and curriculum development, peer-reviewed publications and collaborative activities that are validated by peers and communicated to others in the field
• Provide leadership in supporting the Willow Lake Student Farm

Research
• Develop a vigorous, externally-funded and nationally-recognized research program focused on the sustainability, productivity, quality and/or profitability of horticultural crops for local food production
• Strong record of refereed publications is expected
• Collaborate in research projects with horticulture and related discipline faculty members located at K-State Olathe, the K-State Olathe Horticulture Research and Extension Center, and the John C. Pair Horticulture Center, Haysville, KS
• Preferred areas of disciplinary expertise could include one or more of the following: sustainability assessment, urban cropping systems, organic fruit and vegetable production, sustainable production systems, organic and regenerative farming methods, and controlled environment production systems
• Participate in all facets of graduate education, including graduate advisement, through chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and publishing the results with his/her graduate students
