The genetic relationships of Lilium 11 species native to Korea including L. hansonii, were investigated based on the sequencing data of the rbcL gene and atpB-rbcL intergenic spacer from chloroplast genome and internal transcribed spacers of rRNA genes (ITS) from nuclear genome. Only sequence analysis for ITS differentiated most of the species. Based on ITS sequence analysis, species native to Korea is divided into two major sections; Martagon and Sinomartagon. Lilium hansonii, L. tsingtauense, and L. distichum, which have verticillate leaves, belonged to the section Martagon, which could be divided into two subsections, for L. hansonii (subsection I) and for L. tsingtauense and L. distichum (subsection II). Our ITS results suggest dividing the Sinomartagon section possibly into 4 subsections; L. cernuum (subsection III), L. dauricum (subsection IV), and L. lancifolium and L. leichtlinii (subsection V). Lilium dauricum and L. lancifolium is aggregated together as a subsection of Sinomartagon, and does not belong to subsections of Daurolirion and Lancifolium, respectively.
