INITIAL OBSERVATIONS ON A NUCELLAR POPULATION OF "NAVELATE" SWEET ORANGE IN VITRO

A. Starrantino, F. Russo, S. Martelli
In 1976 three hundred nucellar seedlings of the "Navelate" orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) were obtained from "in vitro" cultures of undeveloped ovules. Sixty-four of these seedlings presenting a less thorny apical portion were chosen and propagated on sour orange (C. aurantium L.) and "Troyer" citrange (C. sinesnsis x Poncirus trifoliata) rootstocks and raised in a field plot of the "Pantanello Farm" in Metaponto (MT). Almost all the 64 nucellar clones of "Navelate" were very similar for many characteristics and only in few of them were observed some little differences.
