There is a wide range of cultivars of chestnuts owing to intercultivar and intracultivar variations. The factors responsible for intercultivar diversity are related to its self-barren nature and the capacity to adapt to the features of different environments in the course of history. Intracultivar variability is due to environment and is responsible for the differences among trees from the same cultivar, which come from different places or crops. This biodiversity is of great genetic interest but becomes a problem at the moment of crop processing, since it is not easy to get uniform parties. In this study we classified from a morphological point of view, the most widespread cultivars of chestnut in the region of Verín-Monterrei: ‘Bermella’, ‘Blanca’, ‘Boullona’, ‘Calva’, ‘Casarella’, ‘Corronchuda’, ‘Das Viñas’, ‘Famosa’, ‘Foleiro’, ‘Inxerta’, ‘Longal’, ‘Monfortina’, ‘Soutiña’, ‘Touro’ and ‘Vilamaesa’. On the evidence of biometries done on leaves, flowers and fruits, we found that the traits related to the morphology of leaves and fruits make possible to explain the main part of variability among cultivars.
