Horticulture Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP)
Horticulture Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP), call for Immediate Impact Pre-proposals (Deadline November 15, 2009). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has selected the University of California, Davis, to manage a new $15 million, five-year global Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) in Horticulture (www.hortcrsp.ucdavis.edu or hortcrsp.ucdavis.edu). The Horticulture CRSP will support partnerships to undertake research, capacity building, policy development and extension activities to improve horticultural production and marketing, and thereby make a difference in many of the poorest countries in the world.
To ensure early results from the program, the first year of funding will be devoted to Immediate Impact Projects which will be one year in duration. In this call, we are seeking pre-proposals from qualified institutions and investigators for ‘shovel ready’ projects that address the priorities, objectives, and themes of the Horticulture CRSP (see below) and can be implemented rapidly. Our objective is to seek proposals based on previously-prepared grant proposals (for example the USDA Specialty Crops Initiative) or building on existing research and education programs that can readily be re-purposed to the requirements of the Horticulture CRSP. Since our first-year budget provides for approximately 14 Immediate Impact Projects, the HortCRSP Program Council will select a limited number of pre-proposals, and the selected PIs will be asked to prepare full proposals. The maximum amount awarded per project will be $150,000. The award period will be for one year (approximately 1/1/10 – 12/31/10), and therefore the timeline for preparation of full proposals will be very short, which underscores the importance of presenting pre-proposals based on previously-prepared grant proposals or existing collaborations. There will be additional calls for proposals in spring 2010 that will provide more time to prepare the application.
Requirements for Immediate Impact Projects
1. The lead PI(s) must be from a Land Grant or other US College or University, as defined under Title XII
2. The research/outreach project must includes Co-PI(s) and/or collaborator(s) in a developing country or countries, especially in the Horticulture CRSP’s initial target regions of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, or south Asia
3. The project should be reasonably completed and show specific impacts in one year
4. The project seeks impacts that fit the objectives, overarching themes and priority areas of the Horticulture CRSP, as described on our website, www.hortcrsp.ucdavis.edu or hortcrsp.ucdavis.edu.
Submission: More information, the call for proposals, and an online submission form are all posted on the website, www.hortcrsp.ucdavis.edu or hortcrsp.ucdavis.edu. Institutional signature is not required for submission of a pre-proposal.
