The third international Fascination of Plants Day 2015 will be launched under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture, in sustainably producing food, as well as for horticulture, forestry, and all of the non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy, and pharmaceuticals.

Mexico was awarded the role of host for the VIII International Postharvest Symposium in 2016. However, Dr. Gustavo Gonzalez Aquilar has decided to withdraw as host because of the uncertain security issues in his country at this time. While I am disappointed on behalf of Gustavo and the Mexican team, I am very pleased and thankful that Dr. Francisco Artes has agreed to run the conference in Spain. We hope that Mexico will have another opportunity to host this important postharvest meeting in future years.
The International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) held the board meeting early December at Kyoto University, for the first time to have one in Japan, and took the opportunity to make a courtesy visit to the university's Graduate School of Agriculture (GSA) leadership on 5 December.

Millions of smallholder banana farmers in Tanzania and Uganda are set to benefit from a new $13.8 million project to develop and distribute higher-yielding, disease-resistant hybrid banana varieties. The effort is being funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Rony Swennen, a professor at KU Leuven (Belgium) and head of banana breeding at IITA, is leading the project.

The 29th International Horticultural Congress (IHC2014), an outstanding success and unique opportunity in terms of advocacy for the profession. Held in Brisbane from 17-22 August 2014, it attracted 3,400 delegates from 106 countries.
With the addition of more than 9 hours video footage covering the most important moments of the successful International Horticultural Congress, IHC2014, last August in Brisbane, ISHS recently launched its video channel on YouTube, adding to the already popular "Harvesting the Sun" video.
On August 21, 2014, at the ISHS General Assembly in Brisbane, Australia which took place at the 2014 International Horticultural Congress (IHC2014) the new ISHS Board came into office for a 4-year term until the next International Horticultural Congress (IHC2018) in Istanbul, Turkey.

During the next International Horticultural Congress (IHC2014, Brisbane, Australia, August 2014) those (re)elected will come into office for the next 4-year term: 2014-2018 (until the next IHC2018 in Istanbul, Turkey, 2018).
