AIPH and ISHS: partners in horticulture

AIPH

The AIPH is a coordinating body representing horticultural producers' organisations all over the world. It was founded in Switzerland in 1948 to stimulate international marketing of flowers, plants and landscaping services. An increasing number of growers organisations have joined AIPH with 26 countries represented in 2006. Member countries pay a membership fee.

The AIPH Statistical Yearbook is a unique global reference book compiling figures on production, acreage and trade movements is a gigantic task, especially since some countries do not keep meticulous records of these figures. Even so, the AIPH still manages to publish a comprehensive handbook each year, containing statistics from all affiliated countries. The book is packed with tables, diagrams and surveys, classified according to country, plant, market and consumption, and as such is a useful reference book for organisations, policy makers, producers and traders.
The book is available from ISHS at a cost of EUR 110. To order your copy

Platform for exchanging knowledge

The free flow of information as regards the international trade in ornamental plant products is one of he spearheads of AIPH and is realised via exchange of knowledge and experience. The exchanges take place during meetings at the annual Congress and during theme sessions. The most important AIPH publication is the yearbook containing statistics on production, trade and market developments.

Four standing committees operate within the AIPH in the fields of breeders' rights, environment, recognition of international horticultural exhibitions and the Statistical Yearbook. The organisation works in close cooperation with the international flower trade association, Union Fleurs. AIPH represents the participating countries in discussions with the international bodies like the International Bureau on Exhibitions (BIE), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the international organisation for the protection of breeders' rights (UPOV).

AIPH, founded in 1948, and ISHS share a common objective of strengthening and serving the economic and professional interests of horticultural industry worldwide. Both organizations have a broad international membership base and organizational structures that confer broad decision making authority to a Council of country representatives, thus ensuring a degree of international consensus on important decisions.

AIPH plays an international key role in sanctioning and coordinating national and international horticultural expositions that present to millions of people the wealth of products of the ornamental horticultural industry and the beauty and genius of interior and exterior landscape design. The member organizations of AIPH encounter, from time to time, specific issues that can usefully be addressed by scientists of the ISHS Sections and Commissions.

AIPH and ISHS recognize the need to better educate the general public about the nature and scope of horticultural science and its importance to humankind everywhere. Both AIPH and ISHS recognize that combining international scientific symposia on specific ornamental horticulture topics with some of the large AIPH sanctioned exhibitions could strengthen these exhibitions and help ensure the success of these ISHS symposia.

AIPH and ISHS will strengthen their relationship by committing to the following principles and practices:

  • Stronger communication links between AIPH and ISHS
  • Linking ISHS symposia with AIPH-sanctioned expositions
  • Promoting horticultural research and university level horticultural education at AIPH sanctioned exhibitions
