ORGANICS AT THE CROSSROADS: TRENDS IN ORGANIC RETAILING IN THE UNITED STATES

D. Harris
Organic produce sales have grown along with overall organic sales increases in the USA. The percent of organic produce sales represented by fruit is increasing and expected to hit 50% by 2013. Core organic consumers represent 8% of the US population, while organic produce comprises only 5% of all produce sales, signaling clear growth potential when coupled with the 30% of consumers who are organic-friendly. While challenges such as food safety, year-round supply, and pricing exist, the strengths of the organic produce sector argue for a positive outlook in the future.
