PREDICTION OF LIVESTOCK ODOUR DISPERSION OVER COMPLEX TERRAIN USING CFD TECHNOLOGY: REVIEW AND SIMULATION STUDY

The applications of CFD modelling and simulations were introduced in this research. In the past century, numerical investigations have tried to estimate the dispersion distance. However, the extent and rate of dispersion could vary significantly, depending on the location of odour release, odour concentration, weather conditions, topographical conditions and offensiveness of the odour sensation. This meant that the numerical modelling could complement these difficulties of field experiment by saving cost and time. To address this issue, computational fluid dynamics has been used to predict the dispersion of livestock odour under various factors in order to come up with practical solutions to relieve recent odour conflicts. To ensure the accuracy of simulated solutions, CFD models were built based on the field measurements and their computed results were practically validated. Utilizing these CFD modelling and simulation approaches, the environmental impact of livestock odour was evaluated and quantified, and the performance of windbreaks to reduce the odour dispersion was assessed. Consequently, CFD has proven to be an effective way to take preventive measures against the livestock odour dispersion.
