THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY FOR GOOD QUALITY LONGKONG IN THE LOWER SOUTHERN AREA

Development of technologies to increase efficiency of quality longkong production was investigated in lower southern Thailand. Private longkong orchards in Phatthalung, Songkhla and Satun provinces were selected as experimental sites. This project includes three experiments. First experiment, integrated orchards management of longkong to compare farmer treatment and recommended treatment. It was found that yield of recommended treatment was higher than farmer practice. Yield increased 45.1% above farmer practice. Fruit quality of recommended treatment was 51.6% in grade A, while farmer practice was 34.8% in grade C. It was found that the profit of recommended treatment was higher than farmer practice method by more than 72.5%. Benefit/cost ratio of recommended practice was higher than farmer practice at 3.2 and 2.8, respectively. The second experiment consisted of disease management to compare between control (no pesticide and no biofungicide) and pesticide used. It was shown that sooty mold was reduced by the use of pesticide and bio-fungicide. Applications with benomyl or Bacillus subtilis a month before harvest were the best treatments for controlling sooty mold. However, combination between pesticide or biofungicide with pruning and integrated orchards management could also reduce the sooty mold problem. The third and final experiment involves postharvest technology to compare between no fumigation and 1-MCP fumigation combined with wrapping on various packaging. It was found that 1-MCP fumigation, foam-net wrapped combined with ethylene absorbent (potassium permanganate) stored at 18°C could prolong the life of longkong up to 14 days. Its pericarp colour, flesh colour and taste were acceptable to consumers.
