THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS IN 'FEIZIXIAO' AND 'GUIWEI' DURING FLORAL INDUCTION
Feizixiao and Guiwei, the two major litchi (Litchi chinensis) cultivars in China were used to study their photosynthetic characteristics during winter.
Diurnal variations of net photosynthetic rate (Pn) of both cultivars in winter showed three peaks with a midday depression.
There was a significant positive correlation between Pn and stomatal conductance (Gs), but Pn was negatively correlated with intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci). Midday depression of Pn was a result of stomatal limitation.
The light compensation point (LCP), light saturation point (LSP) and apparent quantum yields (AQY) of litchi indicated that it was a heliophilous plant.
But comparing the two cultivars, it was found that the values of leaf morphological indexes (leaf area (LA), specific leaf weight (SLW) and Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD)) and photosynthetic indexes (Pn, Gs, Ci, transpiration rate (Tr), LSP, AQY, CO2 saturation point (CSP) and carboxylation efficiency (CE)) were significantly higher in Feizixiao than in Guiwei. Furthermore, Feizixiao had a faster post-illumination photosynthesis increase than Guiwei. As a whole, Feizixiao had a better photosynthetic capacity than Guiwei in winter.
Lower photosynthetic productivity in Guiwei could be one of the reasons for the lower yield in this cultivar.
