THE NEW 'PIRCINQUE' STRAWBERRY CULTIVAR RELEASED UNDER ITALY'S PIR PROJECT
The dominant strawberry cultivars in the major growing districts of Italys southern areas are Sabrosa®Candonga and Camarosa, with other cultivars relegated to a marginal role. A new public-private breeding project named PIR was begun in the Metaponto area of Basilicata Region in 2005 to develop new strawberry genotypes suited to this and other southern Italian regions as well as being well-adapted to winter plug and bare-root planting for earliness, high cropping and good fruit quality. The first significant result of PIR was the release of cultivar Pircinque, an early, short-day cultivar from a 2004 cross of Ventana × Nora that was selected in 2006, tested as PIR 04.228.5, released in 2010 and patented in the European Union. We report the first significant results of Pircinque, including growth habit, fruit traits and pathogen-tolerance.
