METHYL BROMIDE ALTERNATIVES (CHEMICAL AND NON-CHEMICAL) FOR STRAWBERRY CULTIVATION IN CONVENTIONAL AREAS OF PRODUCTION

J.M. López-Aranda
The phasing-out of methyl bromide (MB) for soil disinfestation in strawberry industries from A2 and A5 countries of the Montreal Protocol is discussed. The use of chemical and non-chemical alternatives, and current fumigation practices for strawberry fruit and nursery production in several areas in the world is presented. The most widespread chemical solutions are mixtures of 1,3-D:Pic, Pic alone and MS. The most widespread non-chemical solutions are crop rotations and soil less cultivation concentrated in A2 EU countries.
