IDENTIFICATION OF SALINE TOLERANT TURFGRASS SPECIES WITH OPTIMUM TURF QUALITY FOR URBAN LANDSCAPING IN UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Relative salinity tolerance of eight turfgrass cultivars, three paspalum grasses (viz. ‘Sea Dwarf’, ‘Salam’, ‘Sea Isle 2000’); four Bermudagrass (viz. ‘Yukon’, ‘Princess 77’, ‘SR 9554’, ‘Tifgreen’) and tall fescue as control, were tested under five different salinity levels of irrigation consisting of 5000, 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 ppm of salinity. Control plants were irrigated with non-saline water. Plants were held under sustained salinity for a period of two years to determine the tolerance and retention of turf quality of the cultivars. Succulence (%), shoot count (per m2), intensity of colour, ground coverage (%), shoot fresh weight and dry weight (g/m2) recorded significant differences under different levels of salinity. Cultivars ‘Salam’, ‘Sea Isle 2000’, ‘Sea Dwarf’ paspalum continued to show extreme tolerance to salinity. These cultivars can be considered as halophytes suitable for turf.
