PRELIMINARY PERFORMANCE OF NEW INTRODUCED AND COMMERCIALLY GROWN HAZELNUT CULTIVARS IN THE BIO BIO REGION, CENTRAL-SOUTH OF CHILE

New hazelnut cultivars introduced from the Hazelnut Breeding Program at Oregon State University (Corvallis), and commercially grown cultivars were evaluated from 2007 to 2011 at Santa Rosa, Experimental Farm at Centro Regional de Investigación Quilamapu, Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (latitude 36°31’34”S; longitude 71°54’40”W), Chillan, Chile. Plantings established in 2005 and 2007 are discussed in this paper.
The 2005 trial were ten cultivars; ‘Montebello’, ‘Willamette’, ‘Lewis’, ‘Mortarella’, ‘Butler’, ‘Casina’, ‘Ennis’, ‘Hall’s Giant’, ‘Negret’, ‘Tonda delle Langhe’. During the first years of evaluation, the cultivars; ‘Ennis’, ‘Mortarella’, ‘Butler’, ‘Montebello’ and ‘Willamette’ had cumulative nut production greater than ‘Hall’s Giant’, ‘Negret’ and ‘Tonda delle Langhe’, which had the lowest cumulative nut production.
The yield efficiency of the cultivar ‘Casina’ was the highest (54.8%), while ‘Montebello’ was the lowest (33.35%). The cultivars ‘Ennis’, ‘Lewis’, ‘Casina’ and ‘Mortarella’ exhibited the lowest percentages of blanks (0, 1, 2 and 4% respectively), while the cultivars ‘Montebello’, ‘Butler’, ‘Hall’s Giant’ and ‘Willamette’, presented 18, 13, 11 and 11% respectively. Kernel weight of the cultivar ‘Ennis’ was 2,14 g, while ‘Montebello’ and ‘Casina’ were 1.0 g each. The cultivar ‘Lewis’ had a kernel weight of 1.4 g.
The 2008 trial included ‘San Giovanni’, ‘Gem’, ‘Epsilon’, ‘Ennis’, ‘Zeta’, ‘Clark’, ‘Lewis’, ‘Delta’, ‘Pauetet’, ‘Mortarella’, ‘Ribet’, ‘Ghirara’, ‘Ianussa Racina’, OSU 540.130 and ‘Santiam’. ‘San Giovanni’ had the highest production (1 kg/plant) and ‘Epsilon’, ‘Gem’, ‘Mortarella’, ‘Lewis’, ‘Pauetet’ and ‘Ribet’ had 0.5 kg/plant by the four leaf.
