VALENCIAN CITRUS INTERNATIONAL TRADE EVOLUTION: A VIEW FROM THE TRANSPORT MODES USED AND THE GENERATION OF CO2 EMISSIONS
Spain is the world leader in citrus exportation. The Spanish citrus undertakings have been always export-oriented. Within the country, the Valencian Region, represents 75% of the total Spanish citrus exports. The majority of these exports are transported by road. In the global marketplace, transport modes could play a relevant role in positioning the product in the market. For this reason, Governments are promoting measures to optimize and reduce energy consumption. Consumers are not only concerned about issues such as price, but also environmental issues are very important in their purchase decision process. Given the relationship of energy consumption and generation of greenhouse gases that are produced in the citrus transport, this research analyses the different modes used in the Valencian citrus exports.
