Market-driven-technology-push initiative: the application of controlled environment agriculture production system for mango-on-demand

All year round mango (Mangifera indica) production in Perlis, Malaysia, has proven to be feasible with the application of package technology. This study was carried out at the Agrotechnology Research Station of University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) located in Northern Malaysia. 'Harumanis MA 128' mango trees grown in a greenhouse which produce high quantity and quality of fruits any specific time of the year, were used to prove the technology package from 2009 until 2014. This package consists of combined technologies for mango production, especially for the 'Harumanis' in Perlis, to provide fruits as market demand. However, in spite of high market demand of the fruit and an optimistic future of the mango industry, high cost inhibits extension of the technology. To accelerate the technology transfer, smart partnership of public-private sector was initiated with the main focus of farm modernization that put the fruit industry in the state to a more sustainable level. UniMAP-Northen Corridor Implementation Agency (NCIA)-JPB Asia Pacific realized the smart partnerships through implementation of high quality mango production, with technology improvement, human capital development, and widening market. This partnership model would be an example of integration of resources, expertise and experience to create a win-win situation in agriculture development and economic transformation.
