The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of star anise, an aromatic herb in South China

This paper is aimed to study the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of star anise aqueous extract. Anti-inflammatory effects of star anise aqueous extract were investigated by xylene-induced auricle edema in mice. Analgesic effects of the extract were investigated by hot plate test and acetic acid writhing test in mice. The effects of reducing intestinal muscle tension and contraction were studied by the test of mice isolated intestines. The results showed that the auricle swelling of mouse induced by xylene, the torsion body of mice and decreased pain threshold induced by hot plate method were inhibited significantly by star anise aqueous extract. The final concentrations of star anise aqueous extract are 10 and 20 mg crude drugs·mL-1, which can obviously reduce the contractility of normal mice intestinal smooth muscles in 15 min after administration with a dose-dependent way (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and under the effects of acetylcholine and barium chloride, as well as reduced the contractility of normal mice intestinal smooth muscles (P<0.05 or P<0.01). In conclusion, the star anise aqueous extract has effects of anti-inflammatory and analgesic on mice intestinal smooth muscles.
