Researching of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) seed production in organic agriculture

This research was carried out between 2009 and 2012 in Ataturk Horticultural Central Research Institute. Three okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) cultivars ('Marmara 1', 'Yalova Akkoy 41', 'Yalova Kabakli 11') were used in the study. All cultivars were previously registered by the Institute and commonly used in conventional agriculture in Turkey. During the study, germination rate (%), 1000 seed weight (g), the number of seeds per gram, and yield (kg ha-1) properties of these cultivars under organic field conditions were determined. The germination rate was 65.25% in 'Yalova Akkoy 41' and 86.75% in 'Yalova Kabakli 11' cultivars. The same character was 98.30% in 'Marmara 1'. A 1000 seed weight was found to be between 54 and 60 g. The number of seeds per gram property was found to be 14.6 for 'Yalova Akkoy 41', 15.9 for 'Yalova Kabakli 11' and 16.7 for 'Marmara 1'. The yield was 64.6 kg ha-1 for 'Yalova Akkoy 41', 68.4 kg ha-1 for 'Yalova Kabakli 11' and 72.0 kg ha-1 for 'Marmara 1'. Considering the average yield for okra is between 62.0 and 75.0 kg ha-1 in conventional agriculture in Turkey, the results of the study showed that organic okra seed production yield and quality properties are almost equal to the conventional okra seed production.
