Applications of molecular markers in vegetable seed industry
DNA marker technologies, improved tremendously in recent years have positive effects in seed industry.
Properties of different markers are briefly reviewed.
Utilization of a particular marker system depends on aim, resolution power, repeatability, cost, simplicity of marker system.
In example for estimating diversity and relationships among a given set of individuals, multilocus markers such as SRAP, ISSR, AFLP and RAPD are suitable but for marker assisted selection locus specific markers such as SCAR and CAP markers are more suitable.
Molecular markers (MM) are applied for several aims such as estimating heterotic groups for hybrid breeding, relationships, seed-borne diseases, marker assisted selection (MAS) and germplasm management.
In conclusion, MMs increase efficiency and pace of breeding programs, diagnosis of seed-borne diseases and germplasm management.
