Global challenges for the future of watermelon breeding

E. Sarria
Commercial watermelon production is influenced by many trends. Among them, the increase of the world population will be the most important factor because it will increase the watermelon demands worldwide. Under this scenario, new agricultural areas will be exploited all over the world, and future watermelon varieties should be improved to adapt to lower quality of agricultural soils, lack of water, and also, the appearance of new diseases. Another important use that could have an impact in the breeding of this crop is that watermelon is more frequently used as a functional food. The development of new technologies and genomic information of watermelon is facilitating the breeding in the private seed companies. In addition, these new developments and knowledge is doing that this species is becoming more attractive for the research in the public domain.
