Moringa leaves have been traditionally used for food and medicines in South and Southeast Asia and some parts of Africa. In the last decade, much information about the nutritional and functional values of moringa has been generated. It is a rich source of essential nutrients and bioactive compounds (phytonutrients). For these reasons and because it is particularly adapted to drought prone areas, moringa production and consumption have been widely promoted by agriculture and nutrition agencies to communities at risks of malnutrition. This paper summarizes information on phytonutrient contents and functional properties of moringa, based on studies at the World Vegetable Center and other institutions.
