Evaluation of five rootstocks with cherry cultivars 'Kordia' and 'Regina' at two locations in Slovenia
The effect of rootstocks Gisela 5, Gisela 6, P-HL C, Piku 1 and Weiroot 158 on ʻKordiaʼ and ʻReginaʼ sweet cherry tree vigour, productivity and fruit quality at two locations in Slovenia over a five-year-period was evaluated. The results present the impact of location and rootstock on tree vigour. Trees of ʻKordiaʼ on Gisela 6 were significantly more vigorous than trees on Gisela 5, Piku 1 and Weiroot 158, and similar to trees on P-HL C. ʻReginaʼ trees on Gisela 5 were similar in vigour to those on Gisela 6, Piku 1 and Weiroot 158 and significantly less vigorous than on P-HL C. Differences between trunk cross-sectional area above and below the graft union were the highest on Gisela 6 trees. Yield efficiency (kg cm-2) was affected by the interaction cultivar×rootstock and location. Yield efficiency of ʻKordiaʼ was not significantly affected by rootstock but of ʻReginaʼ the highest on Gisela 5 and the lowest on P-HL C. Cumulative yield for both locations and both cultivars was significantly affected by rootstock as follows: Gisela 6 › Gisela 5 ≥ Piku 1 ≥ Weiroot 158 › P-HL C. The interaction cultivar×location, rootstock and year affected fruit weight.
