Influence of calcium and gibberellic acid preharvest treatments in sweet cherries (Prunus avium L. 'Burlat', 'Sunburst', 'Ambrunes' and 'Sweetheart') quality and sensory parameters

In this research work, the effect in fruit quality parameters after different pre-harvest treatments of calcium and calcium-gibberellic acid was evaluated in 'Burlat', 'Sunburst', 'Ambrunés' and 'Sweetheart' sweet cherry cultivars. All the experiments were performed in 2008. The cherry trees were all from an experimental orchard in 'Valle del Jerte' (Extremadura, Spain). The aim of this work was to study the effect of different treatments in fruit sensory attributes and quality parameters (fruit firmness, acidity, soluble solid content and antioxidant activity). The effectiveness of the treatment in each cultivar was evaluated according to the changes observed in the fruits' physical and chemical parameters. In addition, the effectiveness of these treatments against rain injuries was also evaluated.
