The region of Murcia is one of the major peach-producing areas in Spain, with an important early-maturing production. In recent years the introduction of flat peaches (“paraguayos”) in this region has changed radically the supply of cultivars. The IMIDA-NOVAMED breeding programme began in 2007 and has so far registered 14 new cultivars of the different peach typologies. The programme's general objectives seek to develop cultivars that are adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of the region, achieving early maturity, high productivity and excellent organoleptic qualities. This paper describes six new flat peach cultivars: 'Siroco 5', 'Siroco 10', 'Siroco 20', 'Siroco 30', 'Siroco 40' and 'Siroco 43'. The Siroco peaches series is being released to provide firm, attractively-coloured, sub-acid, high-quality peaches for the low and medium chill zone. These new cultivars will supply a series of flat peaches ripening from late April until July.
