Determination of seven vitamins in different persimmon cultivars by HPLC

The water-soluble vitamins (vitamin C, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin B6) and fat-soluble vitamins (beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol) contents in the pulp, peel, leaf and calyx of 46 completely mature persimmon cultivars were investigated. All of the seven vitamins and pre-vitamins could be detected in the four organs. The content of vitamins in different organs showed great variation. Among all the tested cultivars, the leaves of 'Jiro' and 'Xiaoguotianshi' showed the highest level of vitamin C and vitamin B respectively (583.07 mg 100 g-1, 5.62 mg 100 g-1 and 518.21 mg 100 g-1, 5.63 mg 100 g-1) while the highest content of vitamin A was detected in 'Hanguopanshi' (15.66 mg 100 g-1) and 'Taianmantanghong' (15.58 mg 100 g-1). The highest level of vitamin E was detected in 'Dahebaimu' leaves (39.47 mg 100 g-1) and 'Lichengdamianhu' (39.46 mg 100 g-1). Regarding the content of vitamins in the fruits, the highest content of vitamin C was detected in 'Xihong' (192.82 mg 100 g-1) and 'Fuyu' (96.99 mg 100 g-1) while vitamin B content was at the highest concentration in the fruits of 'Xihong' (4.19 mg 100 g-1) and 'Chang'anfujianding' (3.39 mg 100 g-1). The highest content of vitamin A was detected in 'Chang'anfujianding' (2.56 mg 100 g-1) and 'Boaibayuehuang' (2.91 mg 100 g-1) while the highest content of vitamin E was observed in the cultivars 'Chang'anfujianding' (12.09 mg 100 g-1) and 'Taianmantanghong' (12.50 mg 100 g-1). This study showed that the fruits of persimmon are a rich source of vitamins and the leaves and calyxes are also good sources. These results add new information on nutritional composition of persimmon which can be useful for better exploitation.
