Comparative study of different potting media for tomato production
This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of various media combinations on growth, qualitative and quantitative yield of tomatoes as well as on chemical and physical properties of soil. The study comprised of seven different media treatments including T0 soil (control), T1 farm yard manure + soil (1:1), T2 coconut coir + soil (1:2), T3 leaf compost + soil (1:1), T4 coconut coir + poultry manure + soil (2:1:2), T5 peat moss + spent mushroom waste + soil (1:1:1) and T6 farmyard manure + poultry manure + soil (2:1:2). Equivalent size tomato seedlings of st-100 cultivar were transplanted into earthen pots (14). The chemical composition of all potting media revealed that T6 (farm yard fertilizer + poultry excrement + soil) had the highest potassium (392.71 ppm), phosphorus (69.49 ppm), total organic carbon concentration and nitrate (8.47 ppm) as compared to all other treatments. The effect of these potting media on tomato seedlings showed that T6 (farmyard manure + poultry manure + soil) had highest impact on plant height (33.25%) followed by T5 (peat moss + mushroom waste + soil) as compared to other treatments. Extreme qualities with respect to vegetative parameters showed highest values at T6 treatment including fresh shoot weight (176.67 g), dry shoot weight (46.67 g), stem diameter (1.14 cm) and number of branches (6.57). The total soluble solid (5.20) and ascorbic acid (1.73) were also at their highest in T6 (farmyard manure + poultry manure + soil) while ascorbic acid value was 58.7% more as compared to control. It was concluded that farmyard manure + poultry manure + soil at proportion (2:1:2) turned out to be the better media and perform best for plant growth due to its highest nutritional value as compared to all other treatments. Thus by using natural fertilizers, the quality of tomatoes can be enhanced while soil fertility will also be maintained.
