Effect of neutral electrolyte water and sugar on reducing microbial load in the vase solution of Dendrobium 'Burana Jade' orchid flowers
The effect of neutral electrolyte water and sugar was investigated on reducing the microbial load in the vase solution and improving the quality of Dendrobium 'Burana Jade' orchid flower. The flowers were held in 15 and 30% neutral electrolyte water (NEW; STERIPLANT®) and 15 and 30% NEW combined with 1% sucrose. The control flowers were held in sterile deionized water (SDW) and SDW+1% sucrose (SU) in an observation room (21+2°C, 70-80% RH under cool white fluorescent lights for 12 h d-1). The results showed that treatments of NEW and NEW+SU significantly inhibited the growth of microbial in the vase solution as compared to SDW and SDW+SU which had the greatest number of microbial content throughout the vase period. Also, the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) level and the chlorine content in NEW were significantly higher than in SDW and SDW+SU but the chlorine content was undetectable in treatments of SDW and SDW+SU. However, when sucrose was added into the solution, the ORP level and chlorine content in NEW were double decreased. Treatments of 15 and 30% EW with/without SU induced the decrease in fresh weight and water uptake of the flower stems. The vase life of 'Burana Jade' flowers was defined as 50% of the number of flower senescence including wilting, discoloration and abscission etc. No significant difference in the vase life was observed among treatments. The addition of sugar in the vase solution did not improve the quality of flowers. In conclusion, treatments of 15-30% NEW alone gave the best result on reducing the microbial growth but application of 15% NEW seemed to have better visual appearance in the quality of 'Burana Jade' flowers than others.
