Comparison of animal bone biochar and plant based biochar in strawberry production

Fertilisation with basic fertilisers (phosphorus, potassium) represents a special challenge in organic strawberry production. Before planting of 'Clery' strawberry we added plant based bioChar (PBC) (1000 kg ha-1) and animal bone biochar (ABC) (130 kg ha-1) into the soil to improve the soil fertility and structure. We evaluated the influence of biochars on growth and yield of strawberries for two years in comparison to mineral fertilised treatment and unfertilised control. In both years the yield per plant and the number of fruits per plant at ABC and mineral fertilisation were the same. For PBC and untreated control the yield per plant and the number of fruits per plant were lower. Our trial indicated that ABC can substitute mineral fertilizers in strawberry production.
