The late Prof. Andrzej Sadowski, 1931-2014, devoted a long and vigorous career to horticultural science with a special emphasis on the study of the nutrition of fruit bearing plants at Warsaw Agricultural University. His lifetime spanned challenging times during the transition from the 20th to the 21st century including economic instability, worldwide conflict and the constant evolution of international political arrangements. Despite constant turmoil and significant limitations in the availability of resources, he was able to develop a research program in Pomology recognized within his native Poland and internationally. His contribution to the 'Mineral Nutrition of Fruit Crop Working Group' of the ISHS were both consistent and valued. In one of his last review papers entitled 'Mineral nutrition of fruit plants: problems to be solved', Professor Sadowski sought to identify several key nutritional problems requiring further study. These issues are reviewed both to assess the current state of knowledge but also to identify needs for future research activity in the context of emerging constraints to sustaining orchard nutrition. These included estimation of nutrient requirements during the life of fruit trees. Limitations of destructive harvest for determination of nutrient needs and the implications for nutrient requirements of high density plantings are discussed. The role of nutrient cycling within the soil and tree complicates static balances within the plant especially through nutrient inputs to orchard soils via leaves. The role and value of tissue and soil analysis have played an important role in determining orchard nutritional status with recent developments affected by a better understanding of internal nutritional relationships and promising new analytical technologies. It is likely that improved understanding of genetics will improve our understanding of nutrient requirements. Rootstocks affect nutrient acquisition but have been little exploited for this purpose. The role of long term and commercial trials in advising nutrient management strategies was of particular interest to Prof. Sadowski. Practical limitations to dissemination of future nutritional research are discussed in light of recent limitations to research and extension budgets.
