Leaf mass per unit leaf area decreases as light is eliminated within almond trees (Prunus dulcis)

Almond spur leaf attributes and PAR attenuation in trees were measured. Spurs were collected from three horizontal zones above ground level within the canopies of commercial 'Nonpareil' and 'Carmel' almond trees, grown in north-west Victoria, Australia. Leaf mass per unit leaf area (MA) was shown to be greater when PAR was greater. This relationship is discussed in relation to spur survival and the implications for spur population dynamics and future canopy architecture development.
