The effects of single-axis and multi-axis training systems on cumulative yield and nut quality of 'Barcelona' and 'Tonda di Giffoni' in two different agroecological zones in southern Chile
Training system trials of single-axis and multi-axis on Barcelona and Tonda di Giffoni were established in season of 2007-08 in order to study their effects on productive behavior under two agroecological areas in the Araucanía region of southern Chile. In Vilcún area, Barcelona plants trained with single-axis gave higher accumulative yield (1,824.7 kg ha-1) than the plants trained with multi-axis (1,660.2 kg ha-1) during the period 2013-2015 (p>0.05). Tonda di Giffoni between the two training systems, 1,424.2 kg ha-1 (single-axis) and 1,523.3 kg ha-1 (multi-axis), respectively. The differences are not statistically significant. In Nueva Imperial area, Barcelona produced slightly higher accumulated yield (2,232.8 kg ha-1) on single-axis than the multi-axis training system (2,228.8 kg ha-1) without statistically significant difference between the treatments. There were no differences observed in kernel yield between the training systems. However, single-axis training system produced higher accumulated yield (1,897 kg ha-1) than the multi-axis one (1,446 kg ha-1) in Tonda di Giffoni (p<0.05). Regarding kernel yield no differences were observed between the two training systems studied.
