P.D. Relf, C.A. Shoemaker
This paper will review the role of volunteers historically and currently in the application of horticulture in therapeutic settings; the impact on the development of the profession of horticultural therapy; and the impact that the actions of volunteering has on the volunteer and the community. It discusses the United States Department of Agriculture Extension Master Gardeners involvement in Horticultural Therapy (HT), Therapeutic Horticulture (TH), Garden Therapy and similar plant-based activities. It then provides the basic approach used in training Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners to implement TH/HT programs for long-term success.
