S.K. Guler, S.Z. Bostan
Thirty-two percent of the hazelnut growing area in Turkey, is located in the province of Ordu. Twenty-two percent of total production is covered from here, in Ordu. In the city, which has an important place in hazelnut production, there are large and small enterprises related to product trade. In these enterprises, hazelnuts are cracked and processed according to consumption type. Storage of in-shell-hazelnuts in hazelnut processing plants is not a common practice. In-shell-hazelnuts are usually stored by producers or traders which are in the reseller position. In this study, it is evaluated how to store the hazelnuts and what are the problems during hazelnut storage period in Ordu; evaluation of the producers' and traders' opinion about storage. It is stated that the storage period is generally 3-10 months. The cultivars were often mixed, and a few traders were able to distinguish the cultivars 'Tombul' and 'Kalınkara' from others. There is natural ventilation in the warehouses. There are widely used jute bags in the warehouses and there is no temperature control. While there are no licensed hazelnut stores in the city, some of the interviewed people are looking at the licensed warehouse positively, but the majority are abstained.
