On-farm validation of fertilizer management technology for longan

On-farm testing of longan fertilizer management technology was conducted in the specific longan orchards in order to validate the technology for longan fertilizer recommendation. The studied longan orchards were in Phrao, Chom Thong and Sarapee district, Chiang Mai province, Ban Hong district, Lamphun province and Muang district, Lampang province, Thailand. There were two fertilizer treatments for each orchard as follows; 1) the general longan grower's rate, and 2) the rate according to soil analysis data and crop removal. The result showed that the soil in all orchards contained a very high level of available phosphorus and exchangeable K. At all tested orchards except the one at Phrao district, there were no differences between the two fertilizer treatments for the effects on leaf flushing, new leaves growth, flowering, SPAD, NPK concentrations of the leave, fruit yield and fruit size. At Phrao district, the general longan grower' rate produced less flowering than the rate based on soil analysis data and crop removal and N concentration in the leaves was above the optimum leaf N level. Fertilizer application based on soil analysis data and crop removal could reduce the fertilizer cost about 40-50% compared to the longan grower's rate.
