Development of an organic small-scale pineapple production system in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brazil. 1. From soil preparation to planting

In Brazil, the second largest pineapple producer in the world, pineapple production is carried out by tens of thousands of small to medium-sized producers in a conventional system, with use of mineral fertilizers and other synthetic chemical inputs, mainly for the control of fusariosis (Fusarium guttiforme) and pests. However, there is a growing national and international market for the consumption of organic pineapple. Embrapa Mandioca and Fruticultura established a technical partnership with the company Bioenergia Orgânicos, aiming to develop technical recommendations for the organic cultivation of pineapple, in the environmental conditions of the region of Lençóis, Chapada Diamantina, State of Bahia. Using several experimental designs, the technical team conducted over five years studies on several aspects of pineapple cultivation, from the production of planting material to fruit harvesting. In this part of that work, results and technical recommendations were obtained for the production of planting material from stem sections, soil preparation and the planting system for the cultivars 'Pérola', which is the most traditional one in the country, and 'Imperial', a cultivar with resistance to fusariosis.
