World avocado production, what have we created?
Avocado production is increasing in area and volume world-wide fed by an increasing demand on the part of consumers world-wide.
The demand for trees is exceeding the capacity of nurseries to produce the trees and the increased value of the fruit has led to increased fruit theft and conflict with land and water conservation issues.
Mexico is the largest producer by far, but there are more and more countries becoming involved in the world trade.
China is a large consumer of the fruit and is now among the top 10 growers.
As the crop becomes better known, it is possible that other cultivars might become more widely planted and traded.
