THE CAUSES OR FACTORS OF THE APRICOT TREES' WITHERING WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE "APOPLEXY" OF APRICOTS

A.S. Paunovic
Many different opinions exist regarding the causes of withering and the phenomenon known under the name "apoplexy" of apricots, which is also connected with the withering of apricot trees. It is considered that the causes of the mentioned withering are of different nature /parasitic and non-parasitic/ and so far there are reported 43 causes /probably still more/ in 28 countries, more than 300 times. But in many countries the differences between the withering caused by parasitic and non-parasitic diseases are not yet clear enough and in some of them the phenomenon or term "apoplexy" of apricots is unknown. With regard to the mentioned circumstances it often happened that, without any consideration of the degree or form of manifestation, it was usually marked as "apoplexy" of apricots. We think it's wrong. For each phenomenon of apricot tree withering we should look for the main and primary cause or causes and for the relationship between the primary and later causes, which are usually discovered at the moment of the apricot tree withering.

For the present time, that picture could be somewhat clearer about the withering of apricot trees, and we still try to present to the practice a systematization scheme of the most important causes or factors of it, and to find a place in it for the phenomenon of the apricot apoplexy.

This systematization scheme will base on our experimental cultivar trials /rootstock and interstock, height of the trunk and time of budding, pruning system, system of growing, conditions of the trees, selection of existing varieties, native apricot biotypes, hybridization and rootstock selection/, on
