Advances in F1 hybrid day-neutral strawberry breeding at ABZ Seeds, Andijk, The Netherlands

G. Bentvelsen, A. van der Vange
The original F1 hybrid breeding programme of ABZ Seeds started in 1976. At the end of last century, the first day-neutral cultivars of F1 hybrid strawberry, propagated by seeds, were introduced in the market. In a period of 25 years up to 30 cultivars were released in different markets. A majority of 20 cultivars were successfully released in the markets for garden plants and pictorial packets. These cultivars with special ornamental characteristics became very popular all over the world. For the international strawberry industry the focus was on protected culture in temperate climate zones. Recently, three new cultivars with significant improved characteristics have been introduced for three different cultivation segments: open field, table top and glasshouse year-round.
