The influence of flooding on the main parameters of potato productivity
In the last decade, potato production in the world has been increasingly affected by excessive rainfall, and in some years by floods. Excess water causes a significant decrease of the potato yield, but also of quality. For these reasons, research was conducted in order to study the effect of potato crop flooding on the main productivity parameters (number of tubers, average tuber weight, total yield and yield of market tubers) depending on the stage of plant development and the length of flooding. The experiment was performed in 3 repetitions, with 10 plastic pots (12 L) in each variant. Soaking of plastic pots in an improvised water pool for 2, 4, 6 and 8 days was performed in two phases of potato development: the intensive potato growth and during flowering. Control variant in non-flooding conditions was included in the experiment. The highest number of tubers (6.9), the average tuber weight (75.9 g), the yield (520 g plant‑1) and the yield of market tubers (465 g plant‑1) were measured in the non-flooding variant. The flooding of potatoes in the intensive growth phase for 2 days reduced the number of tubers by 39% (4.2), the average weight of tubers by 41% (44.7 g), the yield by 64% (188 g plant‑1) and the yield of market tubers by 71% (138 g plant‑1), and 8-day flooding by 93% (0.5), 85% (11.7 g), 98% (7.7 g plant‑1), and 100% (0 g plant‑1), respectively. In the potato flowering stage, after 2 days of flooding, the number of tubers decreased by 35% (4.5), the average tuber mass by 38% (46.7 g), the yield by 59% (211 g plant‑1) and the yield of market tubers by 74% (121 g plant‑1), while longer water lying in the potato crop (4, 6 and 8 days) resulted in a complete lack of yield. The results of these studies have shown that, irrespective to the stage of plant development and the length of its duration, flooding has a very negative effect on the yield and other components of potato productivity.
