Effects of fertilizers on the growth, yield and nitrate content in selected cultivars of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.)
Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) a popularly consumed leafy vegetable is well known for its health and nutritional value. Spinach is particularly important in the diet because of the high content of scarce micronutrients such as iron, copper, zinc, and magnesium, especially during the period of spring and autumn when the demand is largest. Taking into consideration the fact that spinach is the most commonly grown vegetable in the world, there is a large selection of cultivars. There are cultivars of spinach that have a vegetation period as short as 30 days. This early spinach represents an ideal intercrop in most of the cropping systems. In our regions the cultivation in greenhouses commences earlier by each year, often during winter time. Therefore the appropriate type of spinach and adequate fertilizer is increasingly important in the process of early production. Also the fertilization source is affecting the nitrate concentrations that can be accumulated in the edible parts of the leafy vegetables, particularly when excessive nitrogen fertilizer is applied. The aim of the research was to distinguish and to measure effect of three types of fertilizer (organic sheep fertilizer, NPK 7:20:30 and NPK 15:15:15) on the morphological, productive and qualitative characteristics of the three the most frequently spinach cultivars (El Forte, Matador and Mariska) in greenhouses of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The presented trial was conducted during the growing season 2016/2017 in a greenhouse without a heating system in the region of Visoko. The experimental design was split plot in a complete randomized block system. The results indicated that Matador type in combination with the organic sheep fertilizer gives the best results when it comes to yield, while the Mariska type in combination with the organic sheep fertilizer gives the best results considering both the quality and the nitrate content.
