Intraspecific polymorphism of Linum usitatissimum L. by morphophysiological parameters of seeds
Increasing attention is focused on the expansion of the range of cultivated plants within the aim of ensuring the supply to a growing population of environmentally friendly food within the context of a changing climate. The flax culture, widely spread in the Republic of Belarus, remains poorly studied in the agricultural zone of the Tyumen region (Russia). Successful introduction is determined by the high ecological and biological potential of the seeds. The present study is aimed at finding morphophysiological criteria for rapid testing of seeds under the introduction of flax. Seeds of 20 cultivars of flax provenances from Belarus (northeastern part) and Russia (northern Trans-Urals, Tyumen region) were used in the study. Determination of the biological properties of seeds and the study of plant growth in vegetation vessels was carried out in the laboratory of biotechnological and microbiological studies of the Institute of Biology of the Tyumen State University. Field testing of cultivars was carried out at the experimental site of the biological station Kuchak Lake. Seeds of provenance from Russia were characterized by greater variability of morphometric parameters (length and width, weight of 1000 seeds). The energy of germination and laboratory germination capacity of seeds were high in all cultivars regardless of agroecological conditions. To understand the mechanism of adaptation of flax in northern agrocenoses and to study the physiological status of seeds, the optical counter of chlorophyll Spad 502 was used, which provides non-destructive express diagnostics. A strong correlation of the SPAD 502 readings with the length and width of seeds (r=0.65 and r=0.70, respectively), with a mass of 1,000 seeds (r=0.70) and root length (r=0.71) was found (for seeds grown in Russia). In the biomass of flax plants obtained from seeds of Russian provenance, the share of roots increased to 50%; whereas, shoots significantly prevailed in the biomass of the Belarusian provenance. On the basis of the regression coefficient, the sensitivity of cultivars to environmental factors for the field germination of seeds was determined, which should be taken into account when planting flax crops in agroecological zones of the Tyumen Region.
