Agronomical traits of oil seed pumpkin cultivars (Cucurbita pepo subsp. pepo) and nutritional characteristics of seeds, oil cakes and pumpkin oils

The aim of the present study was to investigate agronomical traits of different cultivars of oil seed pumpkins and nutritional characteristics of seeds, oil cakes and pumpkin oils. Five oil seed pumpkin cultivars were studied: two cultivars (‘Slovenska golica’, ‘Gleisdorfer Ölkürbis’) and three hybrid cultivars (‘GL Maximal’, ‘GL Rustical’, ‘GL Opal’). Plant development of the cultivars was differing from the development of the hybrid cultivars. Cultivars were observed to have vine type growth and hybrid cultivars more bush type growth characteristics. Dry seed yields of hybrid cultivars were significantly higher compared to seed yields of cultivars. Proteins in dry pumpkin seeds ranged from 37.7 to 39.5% and oil contents from 45.3 to 49.8%. Oil yield during processing phase of pumpkin seeds varied from 39.7 to 41.5%. Fatty acid composition of pumpkin oils was determined using gas chromatography of fatty acid methyl esters. The analysis revealed the contents of the C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, C18:0, C18:1n-9, C18:3n-3, C20:0, C20:1n-9, C22:0, C22:1n-11, C22:1n-9, C24:0 and C24:1n-9 fatty acids. The highest average relative content in pumpkin oils was presented by linoleic acid (C18:2n-6; 46.1%), followed by oleic (C18:1n-9; 34.2%) and stearic acid (C16:0; 12.3%). Differences in fatty acid composition were observed among the cultivars and hybrid cultivars. Cultivars had slightly higher content of oleic acid and lower content of linoleic acid compared to hybrid cultivars. Oil concentrations in oil cakes ranged from 7.9 to 10.3% and proteins from 65.3 to 68.9%.
