Nanzhao County of Henan Province is located at the south of the lines of Mt. Qinling to Huaihe River and belongs to the northern subtropical climate. It has the characteristics of a transition from subtropical to warm temperate zone and can meet the different ecological requirements of growth and development in a variety of nursery stocks. There are 400,000 mu (1 mu = 667 m2) of growth area for more than 270 cultivars of nursery stocks, such as Magnolia denudata Desr., M. biondii Pamp., M. grandiflora L., M. × soulangeana Soul.-Bod., Ligustrum lucidum Aiton, Acer truncatum Bunge etc. According to the investigation and analysis of the production and sales of nursery plants in the county, it is found that there are five obvious trends. First, there is a large market demand for products with national brands or geographical indications such as M. denudata and Rosa hybrida L. Second, the native species such as A. truncatum compose a larger proportion. Third, the foliage-ornamental woody plants such as Photinia × fraseri Dress. sell well. Fourth, the medium-sized nursery stocks (ф 5-10 cm) are in great demand. And fifth, the container seedlings are more and more popular. It is expected to play a guiding role in the sustainable development of the nursery industry in northern China.
