THE INFLUENCE OF DAMINOZIDE (ALAR-85) ON THE YIELD OF BROAD BEANS, VICIA FABA L.

In the Netherlands broad beans normally produce a heavy crop. Depending on the variety and the circumstances the plants reach a height of 80–150 cm. Pods are formed in the region 10–50 cm above soil level. In a field trial in 1980–1982 in Lelystad the influence of Alar-85 on the yield and the seed/straw ratio of machine harvested broad beans was studied. Spraying with 8 kg/ha Alar-85 at the beginning of flowering increased yield by 34 % compared to the yield of the untreated plot at the same harvest date. The yield increased by 17 % if calculated at the same maturity (Tr-120). Alar-85 shortened the plants, but the total mass to be harvested did not change. The seeds of the treated plots were smaller at the same maturity stage. The total dry matter production was not influenced, but the dry matter accumulation in the seed was stimulated. Spraying Alar-85 was not economically profitable because of the high costs of the growth retardant.
