Breeding opportunities in Geraniaceae: enhancing genetic diversity and ornamental traits

The Geraniaceae family encompasses valuable genera such as Geranium and Pelargonium, which include highly prized ornamental and medicinal plants. This paper provides an overview of different approaches that have been utilized or can be employed to enhance diversity and cultivate more desirable ornamental plants. While our primary focus is on Geranium genus, we also review relevant publications on its close relative, Pelargonium. We explore and present preliminary findings of various techniques, including hybridization, polyploidization, and genetic engineering (i.e., hairy root induction, CRISPR/Cas). These findings provide crucial information and opportunities for breeders to augment the genetic diversity of Geraniaceae members and develop improved cultivars with desirable traits.
