Biochemical evaluation of some strawberry genotypes for breeding program purpose
Twenty strawberry genotypes with different origins were studied in regards of fruit biochemical compounds contained during the 2020-2021 period at the Research Institute for Fruit Growing Pitești, Romania.
The aim of this study was to characterize phenotypic traits such as total dry matter, total soluble solids, total acidity, total sugar, vitamin C, total anthocyanins and total polyphenols of studied genotypes fruits in order to be used in strawberry breeding programs.
Total soluble solids values varied from 6.08 to 9.37 °Brix, total acidity from 0.60 to 1.17%, vitamin C content from 44.83 to 68.99 mg 100 g‑1 of fresh fruit (FW), total anthocyanins from 46.93 to 519.36 mg pelargonidin-3-glucoside kg‑1 FW, and total polyphenols values from 2954.33 to 5739.74 mg of gallic acid kg‑1 FW. High values were noticed for soluble solids in Ireal cultivar, for vitamin C in Gaviota cultivar, for total anthocyanins in Daroyal and Fortuna cultivars and total polyphenols in Darselect cultivar.
These cultivars having highest biochemical values could be used in strawberry breeding programs in order to obtain new genotypes with high level of bioactive compounds.
