The occurrence of blackcurrant-associated rhabdovirus and blackcurrant rhabdovirus 2

The complete genome sequence of a novel virus, provisionally named blackcurrant rhabdovirus 2 (BCRV2), was determined and verified using high-throughput sequencing by Petrzik et al. (2022) in the newly bred attractive dessert cultivar of blackcurrant ‘KB1’ provided by the company Jan Holub Ltd. in the Czech Republic in coinfection with blackcurrant-associated rhabdovirus (BCaRV). A search for the occurrence of both viruses in blackcurrant in the Czech Republic was conducted in 2022 at 6 locations. Eighteen of 51 samples were positive for BCaRV in RT-PCR, and six samples were positive for both BCaRV and BCRV2. BCRV2 was not detected outside of the original site Hvozdečko. Experiments with seed transmission of BCaRV and BCRV2 resulted negative.
