REVIEW OF THE EFFECTS OF PACLOBUTRAZOL ON ORNAMENTAL POT PLANTS

G.H. Goulston, S.J. Shearing
A new plant growth regulator from ICI, paclobutrazol (PP333), to be sold as 'Bonzi' will shortly be commercially available as a new tool in the production of ornamental pot plants.

Trials over 4 years and covering most of the commercial ornamental species and producing countries show paclobutrazol to be a remarkably effective and safe growth regulator on a wide range of plant species. Its superior persistence over standard growth regulators should allow fewer applications. Paclobutrazol can be applied as a foliar spray or as a soil drench, according to user preference, and compared with currently used standards, it can produce superior quality of plants and quantity of flowers of certain species, often with earlier flowering.

This paper reviews work to date with paclobutrazol on some major commercial pot-plant species, especially chrysanthemums and poinsettias. Activity of paclobutrazol is normally compared with the best growth regulator for that specific outlet.
