PROBLEMS OF RAISING VEGETABLE CROPS IN PLANT GROWING STRUCTURES
Where should these plant growing structures be built? Heretofore the opinion was advanced that they should be built in proximity with population centres, i.e. near big cities and industrial regions. Thorough investigations, however, showed this opinion to be incorrect. It is most appropriate, from the economic point of view, to built the plant growing structures in regions with favourable climatic conditions, as for instance, South Moravia and South Slovakia, possibly in East Slovakia.
The question of constructing greenhouses in regions, suitable in geographical respect, may go beyond the boundaries of the state. Along the relatively short axis running through Europe in the direction North-South, there exist most diverse climatic conditions for greenhouse vegetable growing. The expensive greenhouse vegetable growing could be restricted under respective contracts and abiding by the trade agreements. The market could be supplied with vegetables imported from countries having the most favourable conditions for greenhouse vegetable production or in which vegetables of high quality could be raised in the open. This axis could continue to the continent of Africa.
From the standpoint of the state interests, however, it would be unthinkable for each particular country to exclude fully greenhouse vegetable production. It should be orientated predominantly to such crops which do not stand long transport and which are most effective from the economic point of view. The necessity of greenhouse construction demands attention to be paid to the problems of agricultural technology and research work, steadily to raise the level of scientific and technical progress.
The possibility of adopting hydroponics in greenhouse production has been studied for several years now. This technology has not been adopted so far because of its high requirements. It is more acceptable in growing ornamental plants. Numerous questions, associated with hydroponic growing of vegetable crops are still unelucidated.
It is our opinion that peat is most suitable for raising greenhouse vegetable crops. This is an easy method, it leads to considerable simplification of the agricultural technology and favourably affects the economics of greenhouse vegetable production.
